Spoilers maybe: A Little Gem for film buffs.

Quite a nice little gem of a musical drama from 1938 for film buffs. There were so many famous people associated with this movie: you have Laughton, allready with an Oscar, Leigh, about to get an Oscar the next year and Harrison, well Harrison would have a number of hit movies before he finally got his Oscar. Then you have American Larry Adler, who I understand was quite a personality in his life time (Black-listed in America and lived his life out in England)and quite a popular entertainer at the time as well. Then you have Tyrone Guthrie who really made a name for himself in the American Theatre, with his own acting company in the 40's. You had Pommer, Dane, Tim Whelan the director, the legendary Muir Mathieson, among others. I wonder who the lady is who sang in the opening moments (the blonde lady as a busker)? You also had David Burns in a pre-Broadway role, he was a well respected member of the Broadway community for years, see Hello Dolly for example, (unfortunate note: he died while performing on stage). Though I don't know many of the supporting actors names, who I'm sure were also well-respected in their field as well, (film and West End)were excellent also. Arthur (Gus McNaughton) was outstanding, The lady landlord was very good, too. The doggie was talented, too. I thought the film had first class production values, well produced and directed and writing, sets, etc. But my first praise is for the musical score and the original songs, plus nicely done hit songs of the time (later to become standards, Pennies from Heaven, there was even "Shine on Harvest Moon", done by the Luna Boys). I loved the opening credits with it's back drop of Piccadilly Circus with it's neons of the then current shows of the time, ("Going Greek" and the Follies, too). I guess you would have to say that I liked the film.
