How come he didn't figure out that his invitation to New York to clean up the criminal gang strangely coincided with the time when the Big Fellow would be splitting the spoils?

Given more time he probably would have. But he only found out that information less than 9 hours before meeting the Big Fellow, and for most of those he was asleep.
