i'm a big marx fan but

this was boring! even moreso the second and third times around. i guess because the material was specialy writtin for them like in their other movies, and it wasn't alot of crazyiness or madness like and preivous movies. duck soup has to be one of the most chaotic and crazy endings to a movie i have ever seen in my life, but at the same time it was very funny. a day at the races and a night at the opera were crazy at the end too. this movie was slow paced and full of boring, unmeroable jokes the whole way through.

It did start out boring and slow. But by the end of it, I loved it. It had a really fast and funny ending.

8/10 - That's a Rare 8, Im usually a tight-ass when it comes to rating films.

reply

i'd say 5/10 just because it contains the marx brothers, without them it would be more like 3/10.

reply

Well, if you compare it to their earlier works it does come up a little short, but there were some funny moments. I loved the sequences with the turkey, for example. Maybe the problem was this material wasn't originally written for them so they had to adapt it for their tastes.

Here's an ironic thing, reading the original play. Some of the stuff that is said by the brothers are jokes from the play. Here are some examples:
1. If you see one with onions, save it for me.
2. Save them for fuel Davis, it looks like a long winter.
3. That don't look like a measle, that looks like a freckle. Actually, this line was divided up, but it was in the play.
4. The eating of the food was in the play as well, although not the turkey chase.
5. Most people would be tickled to death to get as close to a lamp chop like you.
6. If Wagner comes in, they'll start dancing.
7. Can't get the bed out of the wall.
8. I'd like to get a license to hunt Wagner. He'd look great alongside of my moose.
9. I ate him up to the neck, but I refuse to part with the rest of him.

My question is would it have worked with Zeppo (who had long since left the act)? The 'replacements' including Allen Jones is just a poor substitute.

I'm going to have to agree with the OP. One of the weakest Marx Bros movies, with not enough memorable jokes.

reply

You just don't like comedy. This was undeniably the funniest movie of ALL TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And don't even compare duck soup to this. Duck soup was okay, but undeniably the lamest of the Marx brothers films. It was just forced, and not natural. Just not as well timed or edited as the others.

ROOM SERVICE is the greatest ever, so get over it with your jealousy of comedy. I know you bit your lip trying to keep from laughing at this hysteria. You're not fooling anybody, you know.

Now go away or I shall taunt you a second time
that's not funny!

It's not as good as their Paramount classics: Duck Soup, Horse Feathers, and Monkey Business.
But I find it better than most of their MGM movies, like Go West, At the Circus, and Big Store. Frankly, I don't even care that much for A Day at the Races or A Night at the Opera.
This is a topic for a different thread, but ALL of their MGM movies feel like MGM musicals with the Marx Brothers providing comedy relief. They don't feel like "Marx Brothers movies." For that reason, and others, I prefer Room Service to most, if not all, of the MGM movies -- even though I concede this movie is a little slow at times.

reply

Agree completely. I'm watching it right now and I'm falling asleep.

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

reply

I must disagree. I rewatch this film ALL THE TIME, more than any of their others. I CAN'T get sick of it.
