The movie that made Hepburn leave RKO

In All About Me (a 1993 autobiographical docu about KH), she says that shortly after being labeled "box office poison," RKO offered her a part in Mother Carey's Chickens, which she knew wasn't right for her, so she bought out her contract. (And went on to do work at MGM that was, by and large, better.)

FWIW, the wikipedia entry on the "box office poison" article indicates that it was published on May 3, 1938, by which time -- according to an RKO interoffice memo shown briefly in the docu -- she had already not shown up for work on MCC and RKO was trying to determine whether her no-show gave them grounds to terminate her contract.

But date discrepencies aside, this is the picture that made her say "Enough." And, she was slated for the part that Ruby Keeler took. Hard to imagine her in that role!

"All you need to start an asylum is an empty room and the right kind of people."
