Brian Aherne-Errol Flynn?

Do anyone think that Brian Aherne resembles Errol Flynn or is it just me?

reply

At some angles and in certain light, Ahern did look kind of like Flynn, but not quite. Flynn had an indescribable charisma, also known as IT, that Ahern didn't have. Probably the difference on why Flynn was a huge star and the other wasn't.

>>Oh, well that's different. Nevermind!<<

YES...I thought the same thing. If you look at the photo of Aherne on IMD and then look at Flynn's, they look very much alike. While watching 'Merrily' I had to look up the character to see if it was Flynn. Aherne looks like he might be taller...but wow...what handsome guys they both are...!

Did everyone just watch this on TCM? I thought he looked a lot like Errol Flynn most of the time.

I don't know much about Brian Aherne but I get the impression he was a Flynn knock-off, that he probably was seen by a studio as their next Flynn. One wonders how much he chose to try to fill those shoes, based on the persona he projects.

reply

No, but Brian Aherne was a handsome man whose talents weren't used enough by the studios.

reply

I don't think Aherne thought of himself as "the next Flynn." In his autobiography, "A Proper Job," he wrote that he had no interest in action roles, and turned down the part of Zorro when it was offered to him by Douglas Fairbanks, Sr.

Aherne made several films before Flynn ever did...so I think that studios going after "a guy who looks like Flynn" might be better phrased "a guy who looks like Aherne".

C'mon...read my blog already: http://www.mariannsimms.blogspot.com

Yes. He is very handsome and was very talented. I don't understand why he wasn't used more in films.

reply

I think so, but Brian is more sophisticated and Errol more rugged if that fits their features!

No, but now that you mention it, I do see a slight resemblance. It's not enough that I'd confuse one for the other but enough that I can see what you're saying. I have seen Aherne in other movies prior to this and while he usually plays a sophisticated, dare I say, suave Brit, his roles aren't usually ones I could imagine Flynn playing; except in this movie hence the similarity.
