The Death of Princesse de Lamballe

For those who were curious about her death, I found the answer.

According to Wikipedia, this is what Marie and Louis saw from outside the window:

On August 19, she was transferred to La Force for refusing to take the oath against the monarchy - however, she had agreed to preach the freedom and legality of the men. Since she refused the oath, on September 3 she was delivered over to the fury of the populace.

The mob stripped and gang raped her, cut off her breasts and mutilated the rest of her body. There are further rumors that a man cut off her genitals which he impaled upon a pike and proceeded to rip out her heart which he then ate. The Princesse de Lamballe’s head was cut off, crudely stuck on a pike and carried away to a nearby café where customers were encouraged to drink to the death of the Princess. Following this, the head was replaced upon the pike and was paraded beneath Marie Antoinette’s window at the temple. The Paris mob were certainly responsible for her death; however, it was also five citizens of the local Section in Paris who delivered her body to the authorities shortly after her death, contrary to royalist propaganda which claimed her body was displayed on the street for a full day. After the restoration of the monarchy in 1814, her father-in-law finally succeeded in gaining her body and it was interred in his crypt.

Dear God, can you imagine seeing that happen to your friend right infront of your eyes? That was monsterous...

I agree. What Marie Antoinette and them did to the people of France was monsterous. Nobody can deny that. But what happened to that de Lamballe was just barbaric. I wouldn't wish that on anybody.

Nothing either Louis XVI or Marie Antoinette ever did was monstrous.

Monarchs who are revolted against are usually just the last domino in a long stack. Marie and Louis werent good at their jobs but they just had the poor luck of reigning when everything was about to hit the fan.
What that mob did to that poor princess is disgusting and beyond anything I have ever heard. That alone takes the cake over even what the communists did to the Romonav's...atleast they shot them to death instead of torturing them.
It is nice to see that her father in law wanted her body so that she could be buried by someone who actually cared about her.

i must argue with you, i dont think marie antoineete was aware, due to her sheltered life, and frivilousness, that the french people were under the harsh coditions that they were. Plus, with her literally dissappearing sway and power to make decisions in the court, what large differance would she have made?

Well, that's not very nice.

Horrible.

But it would make for a good movie scene.

Someday, someone will realize onscreen all the bloody violence of the French Revolution, and of the true meaning of "liberte"...

"Don't call me 'honey', mac."
"Don't call me 'mac'... HONEY!"

What might have started as a righteous revolt ended up becoming and asylum being run by the insane.

Who exactly was this poor princess, and why did the people separate her and treat her so viciously? Was she not the daughter of the old king? If not, how was she a princess and why was she with Marie Antoinette? Was she her sister? Why was she not given a "trial" like the others?

In the context of the film:
Each time I see this, I admire Norma Shearer's performance more and more.
I know some people say she is overacting, but I think those scenes call for her to "project," to fulfill the charactera and also to not be lost in the costumes and sets.
This scenes shows her acting, hef face reflects what she is seeing...every grisly, sick detail of it and she gives that to the audience.
I didn't know what actually happened to the Anita Louise character, but when I did read, can't say I was that surprised due to the look of sheer horror on Norma's face.
I say an excellent job of acting.

Her father was a prince. The old king's (Louis XV) daughters were rather old.

Lamballe, like Polignac, benefited inmensely from Marie-Antoinette's friendship, getting charges and plain old cash just for being her friends. In the zenit of the Revolution, the angry, always hungry citizens of Paris had little love for her.
