I thought they were f--king behind the scenes, no?
Maybe it was ultra-conservative L.B. Mayer who didn't want them to kiss on-screen because they were both married to different people during filming. He pulled something similar with Crawford and Gable, who was supposed to costar with Joan in Letty Lynton but was replaced with Robert Montgomery.

At about 31 min in Tracey grabs Joan and kisses her,she slaps him. I'm watching the movie now. As for everything else discussed I don't know Just saying saying they DID kiss. I wouldn't think Joan to be his type but then I never knew Tracey.

If I recall the details from several bios correctly, Crawford and Tracy did date briefly during this time period, but it didn't last long at all. In the end she really didn't like him---she had some unflattering things to say about him later in her life. (I believe her thoughts about the actor were recorded in the book "Conversations with Joan.")
