I love this line because it's delivered by Peter Ames. It's unusual for a man during that era to be comfortable 'living off his wife's money'. I suppose it's still the same for a lot of men today but back then every other movie has the woman trying to land a rich husband. It's considered just fine unless it's the money she's after more than the man. Then you have the men who would rather let their families starve rather than 'let their wives work'. It wasn't to spare her of back breaking work, it was a matter of his pride not being able to withstand it.
