Fantastic film: a 10/10

I just finished watching the 1938 classic film, The Lady Vanishes, directed by the great Alfred Hitchcock. It was excellent. The film features wonderful performances and a witty, smart screenplay. The Lady Vanishes was a lot of fun and a delightful comedy/mystery film. A true classic and a near perfect film. A must see for fans of Hitchcock or 1930s cinema. I would recommend everyone buy the Criterion blu ray.

Thanks for the info. twinB and I just watched Hitchcock's 'The Sorcerer's Apprentice' and 'The Chaney Vase' from the TV show, our first time viewing his work, both thoroughly impressed. Now, I can't wait to take in more of his films, starting with the one you covered right here. I'm excited!

I just recently got interested in Hitchcock and have since watched North by Northwest, Vertigo, The Lady Vanishes, The Birds, The Wrong Man and Rear Window.

North by Northwest was my favorite, followed by The Birds. The only one I didn't really care for was Rear Window, though a lot of other people think it's great.

Rope, Psycho and Dial M For Murder are up next.

I've been rewatching alot of Hitchcock lately, and to my surprise I prefer many of his British films over his Hollywood movies. Psycho remains my fave however but this one is among his finest, still very rewatchable.

I have watched Psycho since I made that comment. In fact, I have watched Rope as well.

Psycho is certainly very good. It features strong performances and some genuinely tense moments. Great atmosphere, certainly. I wouldn't say it's one of my favorite Hitchcock films, though.

I would put it ahead of Rear Window and The Lady Vanishes but behind many of the others that I've seen. It's biggest flaw is that it drags a little in the middle.

I love this movie. It's just as good as you say. I especially thought the two male travelers were such wonderful comedy relief. Hitchcock was the master.

reply

I thought it was good, but a little too rough around the edges to be a 10/10. It was as if Hitchcock was still learning and his technique had not yet been fully refined.

This may sound like sacrilege, but I think I actually prefer the 2013 BBC adaptation:

That's definitely sacrilege.

Well, like I said, I knew a lot of people would feel that way, but I found the BBC adaptation to be surprisingly good. The only thing I'd go out of my way to criticize is some of the writing surrounding the lead character. She comes off as a little too self-centered, which damages her likability.

Oh, and the plot is a bit hard to follow in the early going. That also would be a valid criticism.

It was good though, and that in combination with the fact that I thought the Hitchcock adaptation was, like I said, pretty rough around the edges, means I have to lean toward the BBC film.

A 10/10 is about right. Superb film.

Would have been better with a darker ending.
