Opening Scene is Heartbreaking

The opening scene of this film when the wife and kids witness their father/husband killed by the Yankees is heartbreaking. The Yankees then steal their prize horses. The Civil War was ugly. Kudos to the child actors, they were really really good!

Probably depends what side you're on. In addition to the scene likely being inaccurate, the hysterics of the children was overdone. But there was probably no other way to depict that.

As I said, there was probably no other way to depict that scene.

The scene is accurate. The Yankees stole many horses in Kentucky and elsewhere in the south. My gg grandmother traded a Yankee captain out of a stallion he had stolen in Kentucky. She had racing stock on the farm as well but had learned of the Yankees approach and had the best horses hidden a good distance from the farm.
