Beer

In the scene where the cafe owner, Billy Gilbert, announces that Margaret Garret is present and then people start clapping, what does Dunne say what Gilbert comes over to ask her if she is indeed Garret? Is it in German?

LEND AN EAR, I implore you, this comes from my heart: I'll always adore you, til death do us part.

Speaking of beer... Can someone really consume that much beer in one sitting and still function? Both Maggie and Peter, at different points in the movie, guzzle pitchers of the stuff but not only manage to continue 'whooping it up', the also seem fine the exit.

I don't drink, except for maybe a sip of champagne once or twice a year at most, so I've never really understood the whole drinking as a form of entertainment thing. I realize some people need alcohol to let their guard down so they can have fun but why in such huge quantities? I guess people build up a tolerance over time but they each consumed many pitchers and were supposedly still able to walk around and go do different things. Neither got sick but I never saw them eating anything all night either. The next day they didn't even have a hangover.

I enjoyed the movie and the message but not the way they went about it. I also wish so much of the movie hadn't been devoted to the drinking scene. He says he's going to show her a good time for less than a couple of dollars but wasted it on booze. There are plenty of other things they could have done instead.

What he might have done is cause Maggie to take up drinking in her bedroom at night. That wouldn't have helped, it would've just added to her problems and he could have ruined her life. Anyway, the writers and director of this movie fell short. The movie did not live up to its title.
