Why are they shooting off cannons?


I tuned in very late so I didn't catch the reason. I'm guessing it had something to do with the fever.

I believe they thought it would slow down the spread of the fever. Not the noise but the smoke and powder that comes out.

Yes, back in the day they believed it would kill/prevent the spread of the disease---Henry Fonda's character suggested other measures at dinner, such as draining and cleaning up the swamps and city--and people took offense to his suggestions. Of course, now we know this disease is caused by a virus spread by misquiutoes--it wasn't known back then.
