Who's "Jezebel"?

Just wondering where the name "Jezebel" came from as Bette Davis' name wasn't Jezebel?

Yeah, so where did it come from?

reply

It seems to always have a negative connotation, doesn't it? I thought Jezebel was more of the heroine of this film if anything.

reply

a Bible passage quoted in the picture (by Fay Bainter's character, I think) paraphrases a line from Kings in the Old Testament: Jezebel, who did evil in the sight of the Lord.

Thanks heaps. Although I haven't seen the film, it just got me confused, as to why they called it that. I can't seem to find a copy in any of the video shops in Australia.

Once again, I thank you very much for folding out my confusion.

Jezebel is one of the most infamous women in the Old Testament.

As the wife of King Ahab of Israel, she committed many atrocious crimes against those who were faithful and obedient to God, before experiencing an extremely gruesome end herself.

Jezebel was a fanatical worshiper of the heathen idol Baal. As queen of Israel, she attempted to force it upon the Israelites in the most ruthless and deadly manner. King Ahab made very little effort to stop her - quite the contrary, he actually built a pagan temple for her in the capital city of Samaria and allowed 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of Asherah to eat at the royal table.

Throughout history, a woman who tempts a good man to go wrong has come to be known as "a Jezebel."

I read the bible passages the other day to find out more aobut her but you just wrapped it up 'in a nutshell' so thanks.

I've never heard the saying of someone to be known as 'Jezebel', but, hey, now I will use!!

Thank you

Hey Chloe -
Maybe you'll remember (or check it out, in the unlikely event you haven't heard it before)... from Stay With Me by Rod Stewart & The Faces:
"Red lips, hair, and fingernails
I hear you're a mean old Jezebel
Let's go upstairs and read my Tarot Cards."

(chorus) "Stay With Me... Stay With Me" (and so on...)

I believe it has been shown on GEM tv channel 73 or 7Two or one of thosedigital channels that broadcast classic movies during the week. Keep an eye on the tv guide, perchance it might be shown again. Barring that, you can download the movie on Veehd.com or Stagevu.com. Hope this post gets back to you even though it's been nearly 10 years since your request.

Jezebel

(died c. 843 BC) In the Hebrew scriptures, the wife of King Ahab of Israel. The daughter of the priest-king Ethbaal of Tyre and Sidon, she persuaded Ahab to introduce the worship of the Tyrian god Baal-Melkart into Israel, thus interfering with the exclusive worship of Yahweh. The book of 1 Kings tells how she was opposed by Elijah. After Ahab's death Jezebel's son Jehoram became king of Israel, but Elisha encouraged a general, Jehu, to revolt. Jehoram was killed, and Jezebel was thrown from a window to her death. Dogs consumed most of her body, fulfilling a prophecy by Elijah. In history and literature she became the archetype of the wicked woman.

Julie set about to seduce away from traditional values and behaviours both Pres and the 'dark ages' attitudes of the New Orleans of 1852...

...dumplin'.

Many anti-fur protests, few anti-leather. Seniors & models must be easier to bully than bikers.

reply

The very judgmental New Orleans gentle folk (as Julie's mother calls them) called her Jezebel for not conforming to their narrow ideas of how a young woman should behave. She went against protocol of wearing a white party dress and embarrassed her boyfriend by going against his will. That was enough to get her ostracized and given the name Jezebel.

I'm glad people aren't so small minded these days. (yeah, right

No two persons ever watch the same movie.

reply

i know & lets not forget who wrote the bible & coined the term jezebel with all its negative connotations? mostly old men with their own agendas & own bigotries. obviously they used some of the stories included in the bible to reflect these, so that their own opinions could filter down to the 'masses'. btw before i get a backlash!! i still view the bible as a sacred text with many many good teachings contained in it, i consider myself a spiritual person i just don't follow a particular religion (i am open to all...like a 7/11 as big said in satc...!)

reply

Did the OP bother to watch the film? The title is explained. If she's still confused, a simple google search of the name would explain. People have zero attention spans nowadays, which explains so many stupid questions on these boards.

reply

^Everyone, obviously, except you who is soooooooo smart.

As others have said, 'Jezebel' is a famous woman in the bible who does wrong. In popular culture, calling a woman a 'Jezebel' is calling a woman basically a cunning little bitch. I just read a book about a woman who murders her husband, and they refer to her as an 'artful little Jezebel.' Or in Old Aquaintance when Miriam Hopkin's character calls Bette Davis's character a 'Jezebel' when she finds out her husband was in love with her.

But you are, Blanche. You are in that chair!

reply

Agreed. If one watches the film, there should be no question as to its title. It seems to me that many people have trouble focusing on films these days. It's perplexing.

No, you're leaving out a huge part. Julie's Aunt Belle compared her to Jezebel after everyone learned that Buck's death was caused by Julie's manipulation. That's a lot more serious than mere bratty behavior over a dress.

Did you see the film? No one in the town called her that name. Julie incites Buck to defend her honor after she insults Pres's wife and his brother defends her. Buck chooses a duel with pistols and is killed. All the guests prepare to leave in disgust over what she's done. She snaps at her Aunt Belle who then tells her:

"I'm thinking of a woman called Jezebel, who did evil in the sight of God."

An answer to your question and more:

1. The best way to sum this up, is to quote Dorothy from The Golden Girls, when she refers to Blanche as "an amoral Jezebel", a Jezebel is a manipulative woman, who is vindictive and spiteful. (BTW Blanche Devereaux's character in Golden Girls was supposed to be an updated version of Blanche Dubois).

2. The NY Times describes this film, (which I love both the film and the following quote): "Bette's Magnolia meanie gone bloom".

3 Unlike the main review of this movie, I know Bette was offered the part in "Gone With The Wind", but I don't think Bette was right for the part. I think Julie in Jezebel was much more wicked and a better role for her. Bette is one of the finest actresses of the Golden Era. In addition, comparing the book to the movie Bette didn't have the looks that the role Scarlett require. However, Selznick wasn't that happy about Bette having the role and had more or less zeroes in on Paulette Goddard, (until he met Vivien Leigh).

The toward the end of many, many months of screen tests and already filming the fire screens of Sherman burning down Atlanta. Selznick met Vivien Leigh. Viv was British like Bette, but since she'd never been to the USA had never heard a US Southern High society accent. The screen tests are on youtube. Viv was a very fast study of accents and fit the physical description of Scarlett, (which if you look at pictures of the author Margaret Mitchell while young, she used her own looks as a "template" for Scarlett's looks.
