My only regret in this film....

is that Ned didn't go at the end. I really felt for this character maybe its because I like Lew Ayres I don't know but I wished he had left. Though after seeing Linda stand up to her family and go, I like to believe he did get out.

It was driving home Cary Grant's point. Ned has become what Grant feared he himself would - beaten down and dependent, without the ability to get out. It doesn't take much imagination to see Grant's character being similar to Ned in 5-10 years had he stayed.

Good point. And it wouldn't have been realistic for a long-term alcoholic to suddenly sober up and make a tremendous life change like that.

reply

That appealed to me. It wouldn't have been realistic, true, and I think it would have been cheap to opt for that.

reply

I agree. But in my optimistic imagination, whatever Johnny and Linda do turns out to be a big success and they come back for Ned and get him out of there one day. I just have to hope.

Ned could have been anything he wanted to be, if he'd had the courage. He chose instead to drink and feel sorry for himself. Poor rich, indulged Ned!
