The Gashouse Gang?

I can't find any reference to this here, just a surprisingly number of arguments...

I looked it up on the net and got a reference to the Cardinals. I don't see what the music box tune had to do with baseball (though I couldn't make out the tune, which might explain it). Does anyone know why Nick said, "It's the Gashouse Gang!" My daughter and I are very puzzled.

Gashouse Gang was in reference to the Potters seeming shabby in those surroundings.

"No, I don't like to cook, but I have a chicken in the icebox, and you're eating it."

Gas House Eggs is a dish that is referenced in several early movies... Essentially a dish for the poor? It's an egg cracked into a hole torn out of a piece of bread and fried. Maybe because no toaster was afforded and a hot plate was the only source of cooking? Gas House Palooka is another term used in early film...a poor bum?
