Don't forget the remake

"Young at Heart," made in 1954 with Frank Sinatra reprising the John Garfield role and Priscilla Lane playing the Doris Day role. I liked them both, though maybe "Daughters" was probably more believable.

Four Daughters is one of my favorite movies ever. I love Doris Day but I hated Young At Heart. I think Four Daughters has some very humorous scenes. Young At Heart had none of the humour plus the ending was a disappointment.

"Dig the grave both wide and deep,
For I am sick, and fain would sleep!"

that's because Sinatra didn't want the same ending..... critics said it would have been better for his career if had the same ending as Four Daughters..... which later did prove he was a pretty darn good dramtic actor later on.

Young at Heart is dreadful.

"Young At Heart" is dreadful....are you kidding me??? What a stellar cast. Just Sinatra and Day alone would be enough for me... not to mention Frank singing all of those amazing songs. The duets with Doris are so memorable for me. I fell in love with Frank as "Barney Sloan". It's one of my favorite movies...

I love that movie...and the song attached as well.

I really like Young at Heart, too--Doris Day is wonderful, and Sinatra's singing is great. On the other hand, the 3 sisters are all really miscast--they were playing parts that they were about 10 years too old for.

In Four Daughters, the actresses all look like they're around 18-23 years old, which is right for their roles.

I much preferred the Sinatra/Day version! Cannot understand why most on imdb do not.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THESE MOVIES: After seeing "Four Daughters" as my 1st introduction to John Garfield I was blown away. I figured, here we go with this sugary, syrupy family that is so unrealistic it makes me want to puke. Why did a John Garfield fan tell me to watch this? Such a happy family, it was as unrealistic as could be. When is this guy going to appear, and will it be with a bunch of flowers and a box of candy in his hands? I thought he was supposed to be some gritty character. When he arrived YIKES! There was now a complicated and seemingly unlikable guy. How could they keep him real in the middle of all the extremely happy band of girl scouts and boy scouts. He made the movie great and deserved an Academy Award. He resorts to suicide in a movie that started off the way this one did before he showed up?

I won't watch "Young at Heart" because it's not a remake in my mind. I understand that Sinatra and Day live happily ever after and she even announces that she's having a baby. No way. Call it a remake if you want and have some characters act like they did in "Four Daughters" but I don't have to buy it as a real remake. No doubt Sinatra even sings some tunes (I guess I could be wrong on that. I didn't watch it).

What happened with Garfield's success in his 1st movie reminds me of Edward Norton being nominated for his 1st film, "Primal Fear". As a criminal defense attorney in Chicago I enjoyed seeing the courthouse, jail, and Chicago scenery (that's just me). Norton is incredible and every time they went to a scene with Richard Gere I would yell "go back to Norton!" A very different movie than "Four Daughters" but another incredible performance by a 1st timer who played a dark character. Like, really dark.
