Garfield brings the film down to earth
So just finished seeing this for the first time. I felt as though I were watching a frothy concoction about a close knit family who love each other, simply having a great time (not really what I'd expect from Warner Brothers in the 30s) and was not really getting involved at all UNTIL Garfield first appears and, yes, brings the proceedings right down to earth. From then on the film totally changes and the characters' lives start to take a different turn (and the movie becomes much more recognisable was a Warners' product).
I can see why JG got most of the good notices and I guess that was exactly what the filmmakers intended. That look he cocks May Robson when he first registers her while he is busy at the piano was just great: subtle but so telling.
I don't think there's anything extraordinary about me except this passion for the truth.
