it's just that early on, before more advanced fuel-throttle controls, a "blip" switch was used to cut ignition for moments here and there to control engine/air speed.
It was interesting to see how the torque of the spinning Le Rhone engines rocked the Nieuport 28 pursuit planes sideways every time they were revved while on the ground.
