Film Location

This question is for the Brits or anyone else that knows British geography.
I don't know if this was filmed on location in England or in the states and made to look like England. My question is ... where in England can narrow streets with old shops be found as was portrayed in the movie?

reply

I'm not British but believe this version was filmed in Hollywood. However, the 1984 version starring George C. Scott was filmed on location in Shrewsbury, England.

To my cynical American (older) eyes, everything seems to have been filmed on a sound stage, especially the narrow streets. The arial shots were of some very fine models, even the opening of the scenes at Scrooge's boyhood school; the exterior and interior scenes at the school appear to be the only "real" location site, but I have no Idea where that might have been filmed.

Culver City at MGM studios (NOW ITS SONY) is where they shot the movie. THe location footage of the boy school might have been shot in Long Beach Ca

As others have said, this was all filmed in Hollywood.

There are many places in England where this kind of olde worlde exists. The best example is the city of York, especially The Shambles and the surrounding network of streets.

HarlowLad, I'm not sure why you seem to be picking a fight with me!

I was just confirming what others had said - that the 1938 version was filmed in Hollywood. This thread is about the 1938 film, not the 1951.

I'm British-Canadian, and more than familiar with the UK, having lived most of my Liverpool (though I'm in Canada now).

No problem, mate.

Yeah, I'm back in Canada. Did most of my growing up in England, but was born in Canada and have been back here on and off since. Don't know of your uncle, but I'll check out the name.

Although Peter Cushing was known mainly as a horror actor (and unlike Christopher Lee, he had no problem with that), in my opinion, he was one of the greatest British screen actors full stop. Even in his horror films he proved himself brilliant in every type of role. Lee managed some great performances, but he had a much more limited range.

Btw, re: Twickenham, I noticed the 1935 version of Scrooge with Seymour Hicks was filmed there, too. I watched it last week (check out http://www.archive.org - as it's a public domain film, you can watch it for free), and it's a very worthy adaptation. Definitely captures the spirit of the Dickens book.

Sorry, I'm getting even more confused.

Just the 1935 version was filmed in Twickenham.

For some reason I thought you said Twickenham for 1951, but it was Walton-on-Thames.

If the Brits won't show it (see previous)...for whatever reason, then they probably won't film any version there either.

That being said, why DON"T they make their own version (God knows we need one) with proper English actors, in a proper English setting.

Now I have no idea what part of England this was supposed to be in...I know London, but was it a suburb of London or London itself. Also I believe Victoria would've been queen by the time of the story line.

Besides, remember 1938 they were already involved in WW2. So that may have been a factor from the get go. I remember reading somewhere along the way that English (and other European) actors went to Hollywood to make movies instead of back home BECAUSE of the war.

According to the novel, Bob Cratchit's family lived in Camden Town.

reply

Britain wasn't involved in WW2 in 1938. The War didn't start until September 1939.

I do hope he won't upset Henry...

This was filmed at the Old MGM studios in Culver City Ca. The studio/sound stages are now owned by Sony Pictures.
