A Christmas Carol (1938)

I do not think I am nuts, but I am sure that when I was a kid, my father and I would watch this movie on TV and there was a scene that showed poor children under the robes of Christmas Present, that there was a scene where Scrooge eats infront of the fireplace and a scene where Marley opens the bedroom window after meeting with Scrooge, we can see the other spirits floating by and then Marley goes out.

Does anyone else remember these scenes? I keep looking of a longer version of the movie that might include these missing sections, but I can only fine the
70 min version.

Any feedback will be appreciated.

Thanks and Merry Christmas

Hello, relax your not mad. The movie your thinking on was " Scrooge" with the Wonderful Alister Sims. A great movie compared to this awful one. The only thing I liked about this one was the Christmas pudding at the Crachit house, other than that the whole movie made me sick.

I am just a huge fan of Allister Sims version. Yes, the Ghost of Christmas present, had the children Ignoriance and want under his robes. Far better version than this one.

Seasons Greetings to you and yours, by and by which version did you like better?

" God bless us everyone." Tiny Tim.

1951 far surpasses the 1938 version. 38's Tiny Tim was just too...ummm...nervous. His eyes constantly shifting back and forth.
At the end of the '51 version, when Mr. Sim shows what true repentance and "reclaimation" does for a soul, well, there is no comparison to the shining contenance and joy on his face.

And I have to admit...oh dear...we do own the colorized DVD and actually enjoy it more than the Black and white. It has more life to it.

Also....oh boy....my husband and I LOVE the...here goes nothing..."Muppet Christmas Carol." Michael Caine is a great Scrooge, and the Muppet gang do a great telling of the story for kids.
The scene where Christmas Present and Mr. Caine are watching the Cratchit family at the dinner table and the accompanying song, always chokes us up.
Had Mr. Caine been older during the 40's and 50's, he would have been an excellent choice to play "Scrooge" in the more serious version.

Merry Christmas everyone!

I must agree with you. This version was awful! The bald wig and makeup on Reginald Owen were ridiculous, and he walked like he had a board up his ass the entire time. No wonder he was grouchy! The Cratchit children would have been great on any episode of Barney.. I have never seen anyone so overexcited about a goose in my life. Mr. Cratchit was fine... I have seen him in several films and he always does well. Fred and his fiancee were nauseating. Not to mention the fact that Scrooge was sleeping with his clothes on under his bathrobe. Altogether a quite sappy version of a Christmas Carol. Someone on this page mentioned the muppets.. I too quite liked their version. Actually, I enjoyed several animated versions of the story, including Mickey's Christmas Carol, and the wonderful Mr. Magoo version. as for more serious retellings I am partial to Alastair Sim and George C. Scott versions.
