5/10. Here's why:

I don't think CHILD BRIDE is one of the worst ever made (like most people do). Not even close. There's only 2 or 3 moments of Ed Wood-quality. Yes, the budget is clearly low, but it's not painfully obvious once you get into the story. Although the performances are weak (mainly Bob Bollinger's), the drama is effective. This movie is infamous for a scene where Shirley Mills, the 12-year-old lead, swims naked, which contradicts the message. It lasts 1 maybe 2 minutes, and by the end the message is still delivered, so the whole movie shouldn't be condemned because of that scene. What a *beep* ending! Were there any scheduling problems? I mean, why end the movie with JAKE dead if the anti-child marriage law had passed? Because it would make it look like a happy ending? Even if that was the case, what's the point of having ANGELO shoot JAKE? And having JENNIE think FREDDIE had done it? By the way, even FREDDIE isn't dumb enough to think that he had shot him, but JENNIE thinks that and he was so happy to see her that it didn't occur to him to tell her the truth. Well, he'll eventually have to... when JAKE's murder investigation starts.

I think I have some answers, which incidentally contain spoilers too, so be aware, folks. Read at your own risk!

Yes, that's it. Jake killed Jenny's father, so the movies' code of justice required him to pay a price before the movie was over.

Even if that was the case, what's the point of having ANGELO shoot JAKE?

Early on in the fight at the still, Jake was very abusive to Angelo, more violent toward him than he was against any other character. So Angelo had some score-settling to do too. Audiences were probably happy to see him get even with Jake while keeping Freddie innocent of murder. That way, if the law gets involved, it'll be Angelo to go to prison, freeing Freddie to someday marry Jenny.

And having JENNIE think FREDDIE had done it?

Probably just a lame twist to make her see him as her hero and likely next husband.

The first time I watched it, I didn't really like it. I rewatched it on blu ray and enjoyed it more, bumping up my rating to a 7/10.
