Weak Astaire and Rogers; terrible Giinger wardrobe

Did anyone else think all of her outfits were hideous?

And the film lacks the pace and sparkle of their earlier efforts?

I agree that the majority of Ginger's outfits were ugly and unflattering. I loathed all the floppy hats, they made her look like an old woman. The dress she wore when she first danced with Tony at the club was so dumpy (and why did she leave her hat on???). Her "Yam" dress was shapeless and the color made her look washed out. And the "Change Partners" dress would have been nicer were it not for the porcupines on her shoulders. The only outfits I liked were her dream sequence dress and the black dress with the hearts and arrows on it.

I agree with you about her dream dress and the black outfit; everything else was awful.

I NEVER pay much attention to wardrobe in film, I jumped into this film part way in just before the Yam number. When Ginger started moving across the floor, I thought her dress was amazing at subtly showing her body movement through the dress. Is that chiffon? Silk? Perfect for the black/white film.

Can't speak to the other outfits.

I thought that the dress in the Change Partners dance was one of the most beautiful dresses I have ever seen in a movie. I actually used the zoom on my dvd player so that I could see it in more detail.

I LOVED the heart dress w/ the arrows shooting across it - that was so cute! The rest wasn't anything memorable really. I kinda liked the Change Partners dress. But I agree about the hats - they didn't flatter her, and normally I love to see people wearing hats.

I agree, zuzupetal99! I came here as the movie is playing to comment on how cool that blouse is. I want it for myself!

I'm obviously the minority here, but I liked the floppy hats, belted suits, shoes and most of the clothes. I did find the evening gowns to be really lackluster, though, especially compared to the gorgeous creations she wore in some of her previous collaborations with Fred. Perhaps they were prettier in the originally planned color. Ginger herself was radiant throughout the film and I thought this may be one of Fred and her best displays of their unique chemistry. The dancing wasn't all that it could've been, in my opinion, but that's another topic. Over all, it was a fun movie--light, escapist fare.

I actually loved the short white shorts Ginger wore while riding the bike with Fred were adorable- one of her best outfits ever.

In any case,I can't believe anyone cares about her dresses in these films. They are all about dancing, not her silly wardrobe.

I think your taste is in your bumm. This is an overlooked and underrated classic. And if the clothing design hangs you up...there's little hope for you.

I loved her outfits! She looked gorgeous - but, we are getting near to the forties, the fashion changes.

Completely disagree with the original poster.
Ginger's gowns and dresses in Carefree are among my favorites of all the Astaire/Rogers films.
The heart and arrows dress is a classic that has been copied many times in the years since this film. It's totally iconic.
The red and white scalloped dress from the Yam is also simply gorgeous.
Ginger Rogers is so dazzlingly gorgeous she could make a paper bag look great!
