Who hit the golf balls?

Was it Fred or a double?

reply

Definitely Fred; he was an avid golfer. Of course, being Fred, he would have practiced those shots endlessly until he was satisfied even if he'd never before held a club in his life.

By the way, are you a Laurel and Hardy fan? If so, did you notice that the caddy who tossed Fred the clubs and bounced the balls to him with such accuracy was Jimmy Finlayson, frequent foil/antagonist in so many L&H films?

really? Finlayson??? I didn't notice him and I watched the movie thousand times! Oh god, I must be blind! thanks for that - you made my day! :D

reply

I'm delighted.

I had a (now late) friend who was an L&H aficionado, who said that, in some of their silent films, you could make out that they often called each other by name; that you could see Stan saying "Babe" to Ollie, or "Babe" saying "Jimmy" to Finlayson, regardless of the names of their characters.

I've never been able to verify this. Once I start watching one of their films, I get too caught up enjoying it to look for such details.

Fun though, if true.

oh yes, I've noticed the same many times =D for example, if you watch "Big Business" - (selling christmas tree to Finlayson) - when Stan, after have talked on the door with Finlayson, is sure he had made a deal, he turns in direction of Oliver and shouts: "Babe!".

I'm a long time L&H fan and collector, and I also love Fred and Ginger ^^ I live in Italy and I'm a writer (in italian of course, thank god, my english is so awful). Nice to meet you :D

Buon giorno, lorismino -

Thanks for pointing that out. I shall try to remember to look for that next time I see it.

I'm sure you've heard the story about how the studio made arrangements to use the home of a studio employee for that film, sending him on vacation and promising to repair the damage before he got back, but there was a mix up in the address, and they destroyed the home of his next door neighbor - who was also away!

That house is still there, looking much the same as it did then. I used to work at the MGM Studio a couple miles south, and drove past it many times.

Your English is certainly not awful! I see many people here who don't write as well as you. I admire anyone who can write intelligently in more than one language.

Piacere di conoscerla (I hope that's correct...I had to look it up).

It says on the DVD jacket that this sequence took two weeks to film and used up 600 golf balls!!!

According to the Wikipedia article on this film, it only took two days, not weeks to shoot the golf ball scene. I have read elsewhere that Fred practiced for two weeks, however.

Here's a great article from Golf Digest on Fred Astaire, golf, and the film:
