It was o.k. to 'Hit + Run' little kids back in the day? (spoiler Alert)

I watched this last night on TCM and although I didn't enjoy it as much as the movie before it (To Kill a Mockingbird) I was amazed at the scene in Boys Town where little 'Pee Wee' follows Mickey Rooney (as Rooney has packed up & is stomping out of Boys Town) onto the Highway, a car comes zooming forward going about 60 MPH straight at little Pee W, hits & kills (or at least we think so) Pee, swerves slightly off the shoulder, and then the car continues on it's way on a nice 'Sunday Jaunt in the Country'. I know they have to edit these movies for time constraints but do you think 'maybe the driver could have pulled over?'& shown some concern? I just watched in awe... (I did remember that Jay Leno said of 30's/40's/50's automobiles and the era, after someone dies in a head on, you just get a hose out and wash the metal dashboard off...) Boy, that was the day! I guess?...

Even today we have hit and run accidents. The driver panics and speeds away. There was a particularly grisly one in our area only a few months ago. A woman was struck and killed by a car late at night. Only she didn't die right away. The driver left the scene but returned twice, still not calling the police. It was said that the victim might have lived had she been taken to a hospital sooner.
