Underrated

Anyone else thinks that this great movie is underrated?

Certainly, I'm all with you. Deserves a place on the list of cinema's greatest comedies.

It's used to be all girls with no clothes. Now, it's all clothes and no girls.

reply

Most certainly, I can't understand why this movie is rarely shown. Great story line and wonderful acting.

Lubitsch films are slices of life. This film is a wonderful film.

reply

Between Cooper and Colbert, Lubitsch and Wilder, I just don't see what the criticism of this film could possibly be. It's delightful.

I got this film as part of a Claudette Colbert boxed collection. I am going to give it another try; when I watched it, I couldn't even finish it, I thought it was BORING! And the great names attached to it are what made me think it would be a slam dunk.

So far, I can understand how it is 'underrated.' I'm enjoying 'I Met Him in Paris' with Colbert and wondering how that can be so very funny and the Bluebeard movie such a dud.

reply

I never posted this comment and I've never seen the movie. lol, I guess I got hacked or something but I was surprised to see this movie in my comment history.

reply

I laughed a lot during the first 45 minutes, but I thought the second half had less rythm and was less funny (except the scenes with Colbert's father which were all very excellent!). Good movie anyway.

reply

I do. I let reviews color my judgment of the film, but when I watched it a second time I laughed my head off nearly the entire time. I can't get the image of Gary Cooper singing that Mark Gordon song at the piano. Hilarious.

reply

This was probably the funniest I've ever seen Cooper. He's an underrated comedy actor and a tad better to watch than in drama.

reply

If I had to criticise something it would be the title - before I knew anything else about the film I assumed it was a thriller.

reply

i assumed it was historical themed by the title, before i read the movie description! lol.

@Jane Doe01
Have you watched 'Ball of Fire'? He's quite funny in that as well as 'Love in the Afternoon'. I've always preferred his drama. But I've felt that way about Henry Fonda and Jimmy Stewart.

reply

The movie gets better with repeated viewings. I enjoy it immensely.

"Let us be crooked, but never common."

reply

Maybe I'll try it again then. I was sadly dissapointed. It had it's funny moments; The pajamas, Czechoslovakia, the bathtub/washbasin, the onions, and E.E. Horton. I just didn't get it I suppose. What was the point of the torturous marriage anyway? I agree with another poster that it started very well then just collapsed. Bluebeard's Eighth Wife...for me...blah.

Like your signature by the way Percevalx. It sounds familiar and is nagging at me. What film is it from? I want to say 'How To Steal a Million' but am quite unsure.
update: Never mind it just came to me 'The Lady Eve' right? Funny I just watched that a few days ago.

reply

It's from The Lady Eve.

reply

Exactly--it started out strong, but when they went on their honeymoon and suddenly they're separated and she's pissed off at him there doesn't seem to be any good reason. The rest of the movie just doesn't make much sense, and falls apart from that point.

reply

An absolutely wonderful film, I agree.

Does anyone know where I can get a good region2 copy of this one ?

Yes, I rated it a 10.

One thing: was the male role intended for Clark Gable? It seemed more like him than Gary Cooper at times. Even added the same mustache, for no apparent reason.
