Torchy in her stride

This was Number 4 in the series and by this time, all the formulaic elements are well set and very much in place. That said, this one stands out in the series as having the right amounts of everything and it works particularly well.

Of course, as always, the lion's (or should I say, in this case, the lioness') share of the credit belongs to Glenda Farrell who really runs with the part. Thomas E. Jackson, veteran character actor of just about every film made in the 1930s and 1940s (okay, an exaggeration, but he worked quite a lot!) stands out as McBride's partner, Detective Parker.

I like all seven of them (I don't count the Jane Wyman and Lola Lane ones. No one can fill Glenda Farrell's shoes). Each one is pretty much as good as the one before it, with "Fly Away Baby" being the only one that didn't seem quite as good as the rest, but even it was good.

Courage, men! We've not sunk before, and we'll not sink now!
