THE KIDS' FUTURES

Somehow, I imagine them being drafted into the Army and deployed overseas to fight in WWII.
Unlike later wars (especially Vietnam), there was strong American backing of the troops, which might help the kids perform well, and maybe some of them would be heroes.

Of course, there would be the problem of PTSD (called "shell shock" in those days) as well as some of the kids being killed or disabled in action, and how that would affect their friends.
Hopefully, they would use the GI Bill to obtain the education they never had in the slums and become leading citizens.
With Fr. Jerry solidly behind them.

Of course, I'm painting a rosy, simplistic picture here, but...

This is such a good idea !!! Are you a screen writer of some sort?

Nah!
Too bad; I'd love to win an Oscar, LOL.

BTW, as a morale-booster, the kids might have seen YANKEE DOODLE DANDY, starring Rocky Sullivan, er, Jimmy Cagney.

I don't think the continuation proposed by the OP is at all congruent with the stupid ending given in the film.

Rocky was the kid's hero and model and they thought he turned into a yellow wimp. So it logically follows that henceforth, they too will turn into yellow wimps.

And yellow wimps would not make for good soldiers, and would probably be weeded out before being deployed.
