we've just viewed this in our russian history/literature class TONIGHT and i thought the exact same thing, too bad i can't impersonate yoda or i would have been reading the subtitles aloud in his voice.
shareThe subtitles are indeed super weird. But can anyone answer this: Is the text just badly translated, or was it spoken in "old" Russian and someone was trying to make the English sound old too?
"Dude, it's Lord Goblin King, not Lord Go Blinking!"
Yea the russian is old but not 13th century old, I think.
shareThe subtitles were a huge distraction in my opinion. Still a magnificent film though.

Seen much worse. The most terrible example would probably be the subtitling for Kurosawa´s debut Sanshiro Sugata which was frequently downright incomprehensible. It somehow even managed to translate "judo" as "karate".

Haha! I assumed the Russian dialogue itself was written in an 'antiquated' style to evoke the timeless homilies Ivan dispensed, or else the translators opted to render it so.
