one of the best propaganda films ever

If Americans made their propaganda films as good as this one, they wouldn't induce as much vomit as they do right now with their Jerry Bruckheimer films.

Sergei Eisenstein is a genius and this film is a masterpiece. Joseph Stalin was one lucky dictator.

The greatest epic I've ever seen! Doesn't matter is this propaganda or not.
Just compare Aleksandr Nevsky to Troy, Gladiator, Ben Gur!

I would agrue that the film is remarkable in spite of the blatant propaganda. Sorry about the vomit, but Jerry and I are not, in fact, in the movie business together. Glad you got your dig in, though. Could the problem be more with the source of the propaganda? Incidentally, I would much rather fight for homeland and Kate Beckinsale than Olga Danilovna, maid of Novgorod.

I think that the propaganda actually worked in the films favor. IMO it didn't hurt it any. It was a rather good movie.

Well it´s certainly better than Triumph Des Willens.

The film is a technical triumph, done on a huge scale, and it certainly is a unique looking film. It was startling sometimes how inhuman Eisenstein managed to make the Teutonic Knights look, and also pretty comical when they would get their bucket helmets bashed in. The story itself was simple and on the level of a folk tale. Personally, I felt the propaganda was forgivable given what was going on at the time, but nowadays it seems laid on with a shovel!

Eisenstein, like many European film makers, loved the motion picture as an art form..also,as a soapbox for their viewpoints..to them, art and politics are one and the same..which is why we get so many films beautifully photographed and with powerful themes..the down side, weak narratives, posturing dialogue, and performances that border on charicature..I don't mind the trade-off..nevsky is a film with breath-taking moments, but it kind of wears you out between such moments.

A more fitting comparison would probably be Sergeant York. It's pretty blatant propaganda as well, but it's still a rousing film.
