This one or Kevin Costner's?

Hey there, my 5 year old daughter loved the Disney Robin Hood (1973) and now wants to see the live action. Which version do you you think is the best (and most suited for little children), this one or Costner's? Or Mel Brooks' maybe?

reply

This one definitely.

Thanks for the reply!

I agree with devansarty. The most child-friendly and yet awesome version is this one.

For a 5 year old? I would stay away from both 'Prince of Thieves' and 'Men in Tights' for very different reasons. The Errol Flynn version I think would be the most appropriate, but still might have some things that would upset a child that age. Be sure you watch it with her.

When she's 10 show her Prince of Thieves and Men in Tights.

Skip the Russell Crowe one though. I thought that would be a hit for sure, but it really disappointed. The only 'Robin Hood' film rendition I've seen that I did not enjoy.

reply

I have never seen the Kevin Costner one but if you'd like, I can compare it to the Cary Elwes one.

reply

I actually like he Costner one more.

For a 5 year old? Even if you personally prefer it, it has violence that is more graphic and not intended for kids that young.

Nothing beats Golden Age Hollywood classic adventure movies for good, family entertainment. I've never tried The Adventures of Robin Hood on my son, but I did try Knights of the Round Table and it worked! He's three. I would never try the Kevin Costner or any other recent adventure movie. Old adventure classics are just about as realistic and graphic as cartoons: basically, not at all. Which is why they are so great as a transition from kiddy stuff to grown-up stuff with young children. The bast part of it is that it gives parents a nice change from kiddy stuff, and kids a great subject of pride in watching "grown-up stuff".

Incidentally, if you want to enjoy a grown-up movie with a young child, one thing that works great is not trying to watch the whole movie chronologically from the start. Select the best chapters (like Robin and his Merry Men attacking the convoy in the forest, jumping from the top of the trees and then mocking the sheriff and Guisbourne at the big forest feast) instead of trying to make them sit through the beginning or the less fun parts. They'll be asking for the whole story soon enough.

Nudity in Men in Tights? Of the kind that might upset children? (although I confess I never really got what was supposedly the issue... I get why grown-ups find nudity problematic, but children...)
You're joking right?

"Occasionally I'm callous and strange."

reply

The endings in the Costner movie is pretty weird and creepy.

reply

Definitely this one!

reply

I gave those 3 movies the same grade: a 3/10.

Or Mel Brooks' maybe?

That's a parody, so I can't compare it to the direct adaptations.

reply

You gave this movie a 3/10.....

What....

Why?

reply

The Errol Flynn version. Although my British History teacher would laugh his head if he saw it, it's the best one.

Unlike some OTHER Robin Hood's, I can speak with an English accent.

reply

The ERROL FLYNN VERSION is the only one worth seeing.

I do hope he won't upset Henry...

reply

Even for an adult Errol Flynn is better. If you see this I highly recommend you let your child watch The Court Jester. I loved it as a kid and laughed through the whole thing.
