Cagney's a great actor, but Errol just took the part and made it his.

reply

agreed,,,love cagney...

reply

Love Cagney but he would have been sadly miscast as Robin. Errol Flynn was the perfect choice.

reply

CAgney is cool, he could mowdown Flynn in a bar fight with his tommy gun, but flynn would eat him alive in a sword duel! whoever wins the sword fight gets the part. If cageny was there it wouldve been rated R instead og not rated.

wihtout lamps there would be no light

Cagney would have been very good, but there's no doubt in my mind that Errol Flynn was the perfect choice to play Robin Hood.

"Dry your eyes baby, it's out of character."

Robin Hood is an english character, not a 1930's american gangster.

Why use american actors playing british characters? Almost no one gets the accent right (especially not Kevin Costner). To quote a conversation between Price John and Robin Hod from "Men in Tights":

Prince John: And why would the people listen to you?
Robin Hood: Because, unlike some other Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English accent.

in a way,,your right,,,,but it is called ACTING!!!!!!!!!

What?

reply

the fact that a role may call for an english or spanish or german or what ever
nationality,,,the person playing the role is ACTING!!!!!!! out the part!!!!!thats why they have acting classes!!!!and schools etc.....

reply

There are not many non british actors that pull of playing a british character. I doubt Cagney would. And flynn was just the perfect choice for this role.

Robin Hood with a quasi american-british accent is just plain wrong.

"Why use american actors playing british characters?"

Good point. Why was Vivien Leigh, an Englishwoman, cast to play an American in Gone With The Wind?

reply

or vice versa, Brits playing Americans.

Then again, Kostner had the self-respect not to attempt a British accent. Sadly he lacked sufficient self-respect not to attempt the role.

As a Robin Hood, Cagney would have made a great gangster.

reply

Flynn hands down all the way. He was my first movie star crush. He's got the most incredible expressions and his smile is heart melting.

reply

No one could have replaced Flynn in this movie, Flynn didnt play robin hood, Flynn IS Robin Hood

Why didnt you say their would be PIE

reply

Cagney's a great actor, but he was not right for this film. At least not as it is. What I find interesting is this film was original meant to be a musical comedy like A Midsummer's Night Dream. I think if the film had stayed like that, Cagney would have worked. He's actually a skilled comedian and an excellent dancer. But the film changed so much that their's no way Cagney could have worked in later versions.

It's an adventure flick! And Errol at the time was just starting out. But look how many action flicks he did in the end.

You said it CjDull. Cagney as Robin Hood would have been wonderful, although it is very unlikely it would have been as wonderful as Flynn's Robin Hood. Cagney's Robin (and the film as it was originally envisioned) would have been a completely different take on things (and really, thinking about it, quite a delightful one) so it's hard to condemn it as much as my fellow posters before me. Still, I wouldn't trade this version of the legend for anything

reply

The Cagney version of the film would have been very different, not simply because Cagney was different from Flynn but because it was intended to be a very different film, a musical comedy take on the legend, probably closer in tone to the Mel Brooks film. Meanwhile MGM was going to make an operetta out of it for Nelson Eddy and Jeannette McDonald. In either case there's no comparison with Flynn because the film concepts were totally different.

We can be glad they made the Flynn version because it's the definative embodyment of the popular legend.

reply

Not a chance. Flynn is Robin Hood.

reply

What kind of question is this. Cagney's a gangster and Flynn is the swashbuckler

reply

I can't even imagine Cagney in the role. ROBIN HOOD had the perfect cast and Flynn was the right actor at the right time to play the role.
