HIDEOUS COSTUMES !

Poor Olivia De Havilland. If her face had not been so beautiful, those nightmarish costumes would have obliterated her. I suppose being in Technicolor, the wardrobe department wanted to make the costumes as colorful as possible but in 1191 most of those colors and patterns would not have existed and they were distractingly ugly on everyone.

Nit pick, nit pick, nit pick. I DON'T share YOUR opinion!

George Zimmerman: Trayvon should NOT have brought a bag of Skittles to a gunfight.

And that is your IMDb given right, Barry. Cheers !

reply

Really? I love the costumes in this movie!
Historical reenactment was nowhere close to being even a remote wish for the people who made this movie, so I don't see how fashion in the real 12th century comes into this. As costumes, not historical costumes, I just find them fabulous - not just Marian's dresses, but also Robin's green tights and all the rest.

reply

It was 1938 you twat, the costumes are great

reply

Marian's dress at the archery tournament was fabulous. The cosumes in general were designed for Technicolor, and they are all glorious. This is not meant to be a documentary, folks...

reply

Sure you can nitpick that Olivia de Havilland's head should have been uncovered in more than one scene, but the costumes themselves are wonderful; arguably as good as any in film history. Does anyone, other than the OP, care a whit whether or not theses glorious colors were available in the Middle Ages?

reply

I happen to care a lot about historical accuracy, but only in the field of historical reenactment. So in this movie: I couldn't care less about the accuracy of the colours, the fabrics, the cuts... The only thing that matters is that they look gorgeous and make Ms de Havilland look gorgeous, which they all do!

You should do a bit of research on human anatomy as being a man,I do not have what you called me and you are rude and classless to boot.

I agree that I found her costumes to be quite ugly as well. The worst one being the one she wore during the tournament... ugh. Downright hideous. Though I did like the rest of the costumes on the other actors, historically accurate or not.

reply

When I first saw this movie, I wondered if Maid Marian had any hair; all I could see were those head coverings.
That's why I like the love scene, where we could see she did have hair, worn in long braids.

Of course, the braids were fake, as were Judy Garland's in THE WIZARD OF OZ, but...

reply

Those were beautiful costumes. And more authentic than some of the rags you see now.

They also complemented her beauty most becomingly. The only costumes do to her more justice were in Gone with the Wind.

It was a movie, not a documentary. Given that, they did a great job. Better than Bette Davis as Elizabeth I. Those costumes were both beautiful and horrible. So close to being right but wrong enough to be awful.

It was a movie, not a documentary.

And the award for the most overused statement on IMDb goes to...🏆

I think the costumes were over the top because of the "new and exciting " Technicolor Film-they wanted as much color as possible....in reality,I don't think they would've been able to produce such vibrant color in Hoods day.

reply

You'd be surprised how vibrant textiles actually could be in the Middle Ages... especially luxurious silks from the Orient, but not just.

reply

I don't think folks in the Depression were keen on seeing even more depression.

reply

Supposedly, Olivia came up with some ideas at how her costumes were gonna be, and we see the results on the screen.

reply

The Choice of colors and their vibrancy is what I found most interesting about the movie as the story was run of the mill for me.Bold purples, greens and reds really stood out,and Olivia's make-up was beautiful. The costumes would of suited a big stage production,as they were over the top,but original for the late 30's.

reply

The costumes were among the most beautiful of all time. It wasn't a documentary about dye technology of the 12th century. It was a fantasy about the mythical character Robin Hood, and it was spectacular.
