Let's hear it for the horses!

It has been commented that the true stars of the Zorro serials were the stuntmen (and I would not disagree with that), but let us not forget the valiant performances of the horses. Galloping at breakneck speed, both singly and in packs (their flying manes attesting that the speed was real, not speeded up film), traversing steep slopes, having riders mount them by leaping from roofs and other high places, jumping chasms, racing alongside trains and motor vehicles, they really earned their oats. Particularly memorable, of course, were Zorro's pinto in "Rides Again" and white horse in "Black Whip," both of whom occasionally intervened to deal with villains on their own initiative. The pinto was even instrumental in bringing Zorro and Joyce together (literally!) at the end of "Rides Again."

The equine cast provided much of the excitement in these movies.

The pinto horse was called "Dice" or "Pair of Dice" and was rented from Ralph MacCrutcheon's stables. It also was used in "Duel in the Sun," "Tarzan's Desert Mystery" and for the Columbia serial, "Great Adventures of Wild Bill Hickock," which launched the career of Bill Elliott. Zorro's double was the famous Yakima Canutt.
