Scene question

At about 32 minutes into the movie, Stan and Ollie discover who the real Mary Roberts is. They are in the kitchen and Stan bangs his head on a pan. They then excuse themselves from Mary. Stan then turns around, walks back towards Mary and looks up at the celing. I was wondering why he does this. It does not make any sense to my Dad or me. Thanks in advance

It's been some time since I watched this film now, but I'd interpret it as simply one of Stan's typical, bewildered gestures, with no other purpose than to emphasize his character for the viewer.

reply

Stan looks up because he is so stupid that, rather than realizing he bumped into the hanging pan, he thinks something fell from the ceiling onto his head.

I think this response is the closest. Stan got hit in the head once by standing there - what is it about this spot that causes him to get thumped? I don't know of anyone else who could have made it funny.

Only Stan Laurel. Thanks for replying

My God, he was innocent!
He went to the chair two years ago, Frank.

reply

I always thought it was because he was trying to see "who's that lady upstairs", because he first looks up when Ollie points up as he asks Mary Roberts who the lady upstairs is, as if he might see someone through the ceiling.

Nothing like a late reply, ha ha ha...
