Sons of the Desert or Way Out West?

Some critics say Sons of the Desert is Laurel and Hardy's best film, I personally prefer Way out West (even though Sons of the Desert is absolutely hilarious).

"I you want to fool a Hardy youve got to get up very early in the morning"
"What time?"
"Oh about half past...what time...."

Which one do you guys prefer?

Well, it's really tricky to say which is the best.

But i think maybe Way Out Best is little bit better.

But however, what i miss in Way Of West is the spouses.

In Sons Of The Desert, Stan and Ollie's spouses are really wonderfull, above all Stan's sugar, played by actress Dorothy Christy, who is damn pretty and has a very strong character (when the boys are hidding in the attic, and she's looking for them: "Don't worry, i've got my gun, and i've never missed my target!") LOL

oops, i mean Way Out WEST lol

lool, Way Out Best, Freudian slip there, you really do prefer Way Out West! Well, your subconscious does anyway...
I agree, the wives were excellent in Sons of the Desert. I guess one of the things that I particularly enjoy in Way Out West is the original "western" setting, not to mention the classic songs.

Sons of the desert,Saps at Sea,Blockheads and A Chump at Oxford are better than Way Out West IMO. Way out West is good but i prefer the gags and stories in those other films.

Sons to me is better overall, but WoW has the best individual scenes, like the At the Ball, That's All dance and the Lonesome Pine song.

WAY OUT WEST every time!! A big L&H fan I much prefer WAY OUT WEST and BLOCK-HEADS to SONS OF THE DESERT.. The L&H fans are gonna kill me but FOR ME that movie has always been over-rated!! I personally find it rather annoying.. The other two are comedy masterpieces!!

I think "Way Out West" is funnier.

I think "Sons" for me is funnier, but "Way out West" is a better constructed film, overall. SOTD is pretty darned cynical when your think about it, and Way Out West has to be one of their only films where they end up victorious. It's still fun and hilarious, and I hate to even choose, but I'd probably go with SOTD.

I agree that"Sons Of The Desert"is definetly among their funnier feature films. My mother's favourite part of the whole movie is the famous"Honolulu Baby"number performed by Ty Parvis.(I think she may even have a crush on the guy.hahaha)I like the wives.Mae Busch and Dorothy Christy were outstanding. Not to mention the appearance of comedian Charley Chase.

I don't find"Way Out West"to be as funny. But it is filled with delightful musical performances and exciting scenes that make the movie worth viewing. Not a dull moment in the film.Plus I also get a kick out of some of the sight gags.Such as Stanley igniting his thumb to light a candle,or trying to pull Oliver out of the floorboard by his head. There's definetly something special about this movie.

The praise for Sons Of The Desert utterly baffles me; I actually think it is one of the weakest of their feature films of the 30s; it seems like the kind of plot you'd expect for one of their shorts stretched out so much it lacks any impact... and yet I have met people who rate it as their best. I really don't understand....

Way Out West on the other hand is a comic masterpiece - full of inventive gags, enough plot to justify the length, charming songs, perfect comic timing. It not only capture Laurel & Hardy at their best, but it is the best written and directed of their films...

No contest; Way Out West wins by a mile...........

I think SOTD is funny, but not nearly as much as I expected it to be, considering all the praise. It's a solid comedy with some hilarious parts, but I prefer WOW (not the computer game, please), and "Blockheads" and "A Chump at Oxford" for that matter.

Way out West by a mile. SOTD was OK.

Pure and simple......Way Out West. If You need an explanation, just watch the movie. Sons, although a good L&H film ranks low on my list. Swiss Miss and a Chump at Oxford, to me are better. But that's just my opinion.

Well the Laurel & Hardy Appreciation Society is actually named "Sons of the Desert" so I guess that's more popular.

I guess I will play the heratic by saying that I much prefer "Sons" over "WOW"

Even though the latter has all the ingredients - including wonderful dance & song routines, I personally felt most of the humour was forced and not quite so natural or fluid. Although I know I'm in the minority here I rarely bother rewatching WOW because it doesn't enthrall or excite me at all.

"Sons" on the hand, I can & do watch repeatedly. Perhaps its because it has a slightly more rounded story, and far better supporting charaters, including the wonderful Mae Busch.

There's no doubt they're both great films, but for me at least I will alway put "Sons" above "WOW" in my favourite L&H features.
