id love to see this film.

I speak French and they don't have it. Nobody seems to. A bit irritating since multiple dvds from this director seem to be available.

It's extraordinary that such a beloved and important film is unavailable in any European or USA edition so one has to assume there are complications with the rights. I recently bought on eBay what seems to be the only release anywhere. It's Korean and although the source material is just about adequate there are unfortunately embedded Korean subtitles, and none in English. The running time is given as 129 mins, NTSC, indicating a truncated version.
I'd not seen Un Carnet de Bal for nearly 70 years (several times as a boy at the Academy on Oxford Street, perhaps in 1942?) and in my memory is that Christine returns to the Bal for her ultimate disillusion, the room and the gathering as they really existed. This is missing from the Korean release which has a jump cut instead back to the lake. Pity!

I found a DVD with English subtitles here:
http://www.moviedetective.net/product_p/carn.htm

It's a high-quality, region-free DVD-R, and the subtitles are very good. The only problem is that the run time is only around 125 minutes, but on the French DVD, and on IMDB, it's listed as 144 minutes. But it's a lovely film that's well worth checking out. And who knows if the full-length version will ever be released in DVD format with English subs.

You can find tons of other great, rare stuff on that site as well.

It's just been released as part of a 4-DVD set from Criterion (the Eclipse series) called Julien Duvivier in the Thirties. The other films in the set:
Poil de Carotte, David Golder, and La Tete D'un Homme. This version
has a 130-minute running time, and there are some choppy edits and image deterioration, but it's well worth a look.

I'm not crying, you fool, I'm laughing!

Hewwo.
