I thought Lombard was great but the movie was weakened by the stereotypes of the time. The officer who detained and questioned her after finding her at the murder scene was portrayed as too dimwitted, in manner and speech. Sometimes I can overlook these stereotypes if the story is otherwise really good but there are too many loopholes in the tale. And though I love Hattie McDaniel, she was underused and her one "joke" line, asking Fred MacMurray's character if he will defend her if she kills her husband, was a weak throwaway and added little oomph to an already tired scenario.
