Topper not a very good movie

In spite of the great cast, this movie is a disappointment. The two characters we are supposed to adore are shallow, irritating, empty-headed party twits. I certainly didn't care what happened to them. And death is portrayed as little more than a momentary glitch in corporeal existence. They go on as before, eating, drinking, smoking, going to restaurants, driving cars, and interacting with mortals. Nothing seems to have changed for them, except they have acquired the superpower of becoming invisible when it suits them. The best parts of this movie are the car and Alan Mowbray's butler. He would have made a perfect Jeeves. The rest was a wasted effort.

In re-watching this movie I was surprised that at first I didn't like the Kirbys very much. Maybe it's because the idle rich don't seem very funny anymore. Maybe it's also because in these days of bad manners their carefree behavior comes off as rude. In the 2010s, we could do with a little of Mrs. Topper's stuffiness.

But once they died and became ghosts, they were much more amusing, and the movie became much funnier. I loved it. Again.

Agree (for the most part) with the OP. Besides how irritating Bennett
and Grant are (I've never been much of a Cary G fan, but that's
beside the point), the pacing is extremely sluggish. Scenes go on
forever and the emphasis is on jokes and special effects, all
icing a very thin story. But the last half hour, with Eugene Pallete
(and the nice break from Grant, who is off screen for a while) makes
up for it. And the special effects are terrific. Much to recommend
here, but story-wise, it's far from my favorite vintage comedy.

OP, I'm witcha. This is not William Powell and Myrna Loy. Grant is still in his shout and talk fast stage. Bennett is pretty but makes no impact. The idea that Grant is really jealous of Topper because of Bennett's flirting is beyond silly. {One more silly little detail: if the Kerbys were dead, who was paying the rent on their apartment?)

The script was the culprit here. The actors gave it everything they've got, plus it's a beautiful looking movie (costumes, scenery, cinematography). But the characters are unlikeable and they don't have much interesting to either say or do. The worst Cary Grant movie I've ever seen.

The entries on this thread and the OP's post are the most stupid things I have seen in a long time on IMDb. Who says all characters in a film have to be morally superior, or even must be likeable without flaws? What nonsense.

The script is based on the simple premise, putting theology aside, that the Kirbys must do some good deed in order to leave their hiatus still on Earth, but in spirit form, presumably to get to Heaven. This plot feature, really essential to the film, would be ridiculous if the Kirbys were "nice" people before they died.

In fact I found their behavior rather amusing in the part leading up to their death. While George and Marion can be seen as rather obnoxious members of the idle rich, their obvious flaws subvert any tendency to admire the connection between their economic status and behavior. I mean really, this is not apparent? What film were the critics here watching?

The Kirbys pre-death behavior was also required to contrast with Topper's too restricted life. Is this also not obvious? It should be.

Yes yes yes we all know that moderation is a virtue and the standard to sought. But in overreacting to the Kirbys, I think the tut tutters here evidence a personal conservatism that is reflective of the general social conservatism that is too prevalent in our times. Then current audiences were still coming out of the depths of the Depression, with even Prohibition a very recent memory. While the Kirbys' deaths were shown clearly to result from their excessive approach to life, and as such should be seen as a cautionary tale, those audiences also recognized the pre-metamorphosis Topper as an example of the too restrictive Puritanism that motivated Prohibition and more general social conservatism.

In short, lighten up a little.

And btw Constance Bennett was superb in this film. It is no knock on Myrna Loy to say so.

People can disagree without calling the viewpoints of others "stupid." I don't agree with the OP's response to this movie (or with the posts by those who agree with the OP), but they have a right to post without being belittled or being scornfully told to lighten up.

No two people respond identically to anything (book, movie, painting, etc.) even tho they're ostensibly watching/looking at the same book-movie-painting. So you're going to see threads here that get your goat. But you don't have to respond with a gotten goat.

I agree with the overall disgust at most depictions of the idle rich, who have done an increasing amount of harm to everyone else. (For various reasons, I don't have that response to this movie, but I think I understand the posters' aversion to the recklessness of the rich. Not so keen on the "We need more of Mrs. Topper's stuffiness," and I appreciate/agree with your points about how dangerous Puritanism/social conservatism is.)

Just asking you to think about avoiding that occasional dip into less-than-cordial dissent. Thanks.

To me, it's just a movie - made in 1937 when people looked at things far differently than in 2015. At least I am not insulted by the language in this film not to mention the lack of crude, sexual antics that seem to be common today. Cary Grant is well, Cary Grant.

I enjoyed it very much. No, it wasn't a howler (Like, say, "Bringing Up Baby") but I still had some pretty good laughs here and there. I like the cameos of Arthur Lake, Hedda Hopper and Alan Mowbray, and IMHO it is an enjoyable movie.

reply

I couldn't wait for the film to be over as I found Cary Grant's comedic chops quite dull.

reply

Give me a break this movie was great! So funny..the soundtracks excellent! You must don't have a good sense of humor.

reply

Agreed. I really wanted to like this movie especially because I've recently watched some Cary Grant movies which were great, but this fell flat. There are a couple funny parts but there is nothing really engaging about any of the characters.

reply

I wish Cary Grant's character would've died twice. Both the character and his acting are more irritating than anything I've seen in a while. I can't say I've ever been a fan of his, always stirring up trouble and getting away with it in practically every role. The guy is just annoying as hell to watch.
