The 'Real Story' is Much More Interesting than this Reel Story

I am one of the first to remind other viewers not to expect historical accuracy in films. In spite of that, I am often one of those that decry historical inaccuracies in film.

The real story of the Jay Gould - Jim Fisk Gold Ring is much more interesting than this weak comedy. I recommend that interested viewers read about it. Jay Gould and Jim Fisk got stuck by the President, Jim died, and President Ulysses Grant, along with his administration were tarnished. It did not help that many investors were financially ruined and there was a recession in agriculture, but President Grant's actions prevented a general panic and worse economic turmoil. As for the beginning story of the cotton smuggling, I think that was pretty small potatoes, as the saying goes. Dozens, if not hundreds of would be millionaires were were speculating on and smuggling cotton during the War of the Rebellion. Jay Gould and Jim Fisk were just two more, though perhaps more successful than most.
