Stella Dallas' Wardrobe

Personally I think Stella had a cool wardrobe that was fun and lively. Yes is it was garish and overdone but it suited her personality and the cool thing was the character made all the clothes herself. Omar Kiam did a hell of a job putting together the costumes for Stella Dallas and deserved an award for his work. The elitist snobs clothes were drab and uninteresting as their personalities.

Her getup for Laurel's birthday party was startling.

Get me a bromide! And put some gin in it!

It was so touching to see Stella take out that garish dress from the cupboard when Stephen came to get Laurel at Christmas, and sit down with a seam ripper, tearing off big flowers and ruffles from it, to make it look more presentable, in an effort to impress Stephen. This scene (and a number of others!) made me cry.

You must admit-when she went to meet Dicks mom at the Country Club, she was dressed like a floozie. All the kids at the soda shop laughing, then the catty women on the train-Must of been unbearable for Laurel.

I agree. I think she got her "clubs" mixed up. She was dressed for a night club not country club.

Robert Osbourne just said it was one aspect of the film he didn't like.He said she was smarter than that snd wardrobe went overboard.
I think it just showed how cloudy her perception of the world around her had become.Laying around drinking and eating bon bons all day may do that to a girl.

Can't forget the rags she read in addition to the drinking and bon bons.

She thought she was doing well by allowing Laurel to experience the finer taste of life with her instead of her dad. That's what is so sad and a little bit endearing about Stella. I disagree with Osbourne on this. There truly is a difference between "smarts" and "ignorance". Stella wasn't dumb but ignorant about what class was in her husband's and daughter's circles.

In some cliques, Stella would have been Queen Bee.

I agree-the wardrobe just added to the story.
When the kids in the soda shop were talking about her,I was nearly climbing out of my skin with embarrassment for Laurel.
