She is one of those actors/actresses who always seems to play the same personality with the same voice.
Well, she is one of a great number of very distinguished actors who never do any dialect or accent. That's not the be-all and end-all of acting though. The list of other actors who always used their own accents includes the likes of Jimmy Cagney and Jimmy Stewart, up to Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino (even his Shylock still sounded like an NY Italian), and the interesting case of Claude Rains (interesting because that very upper class RP accent that he *always* used, regardless of the character's nationality, was not the one that he grew up with); not to mention your choice Stanwyck (who I love, but her accent was always Brooklyn).
But personality? Really?
You think that the ditzy Susan from
Bringing Up Baby has the same personality as the oh-so-correct Tracy Lord from
The Philadelphia Story? Or that the hard and scheming Eleanore of Aquitaine in
The Lion in Winter was indistinguishable from Chistina the loving wife and mother from
Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?
