Ginger Rogers

I can see why Ginger Rogers went from this film to a brilliant career. It showcased her movement/dancing talent, as well as her comedic timing and dramatic ability.

Two of my favorite lines, complete with the accompanying movements, are:

--"Now, if you'll excuse me, I think that I shall take the wolf-hounds for a stroll."

--(To Adolph Menjou's inquiry about rehearsing a dance): "No, we're just getting over the DT's."

I agree. This is the movie (along with Weekend At the Waldorf) that made me a Ginger Rogers fan. She's tremendous! So good with the sharp banter, and more than holding her own against The Great Kate.

Remind me tomorrow to buy up all the Wagner records in town and rent a chainsaw."

Would've been fun to see Ginger Rogers & Jean Harlow go toe to toe with each other in the wisecracking blonde thing.

i love Kate but everytime I watch this film my attention goes to Ginger Rogers. She's hilarious in this film. Although when Katharine is putting the window up and she about knocks over the table and looks back at Ginger smiling...priceless...I'm pretty sure that was ad-libbed. They both had wonderful comedic timing.

I just watched this today! Ginger is soo amazing. she totally outshines everyone in this movie!!! I love her comic timing and the drunk scenes, she is soo adorable!

I agree - this is one of Ginger's greatest performance - she was so relaxed and effortless in this role. I never understood when people thought Ginger couldn't act - when she had a good director - there was no stopping her! I also loved her in Howard Hawks's "Monkey Business" in 1952.

I agree that Ginger is a pip in this film. Her timing and delivery of lines is impeccable. Much of the so-called script was changed daily and a lot of it was ad libbed after Gregory LaCava, the director, gave the actresses a general idea of what he envisioned. This is a really fun ensemble piece and everyone shines.

Everyone thinks of Rogers-Astaire.

Too bad they don't notice Ginger was a superb actress as well.

Glad she won an Oscar for Kitty Foyle.

If she wasn't so great in at dancing I'd still enjoy her comedic roles she can hold her own with anyone on screen. It was great seeing her and Hepburn go at it, I'm not a big Hepburn fan but I do enjoy her comedies, however she can't compare to Ginger.

And, we get to see the entire length of her fantastic legs!

And don't miss her gorgeous legs in "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" from the film "In Person" (1935)!

Any other Ginger Rogers movies you would recommend? This is the first movie of hers that I've seen and I'm in love! :-D

The Major and the Minor is great-- with Ray Milland, and Once upon a Honeymoon with Cary Grant. She's wonderful in both! And if you haven't seen Kitty Foyle, that she won the Oscar for, you're really missing out on some classic Ginger...

Thanks for your suggestions. I did get to see The Major and the Minor (wonderful) and remembered later that I had seen Monkey Business (good as well). One of our local libraries has Kitty Foyle, so I'm going to see that when I visit that area. Unfortunately, no libraries around me have "Once Upon A Honeymoon". Too bad...talk about two major stars!

So, is it just too obvious to suggest all of the "Fred and Ginger" musicals?
Swing Time
Top Hat
The Gay Divorcee
Shall We Dance
etc.

Rogers has a decent supporting role in the Busby Berkeley musical Gold Diggers of 1933.

Personally, I like Vivacious Lady, a more traditional RomCom and Rogers' only screen pairing with Jimmy Stewart.

It's also worth checking out Roxie Hart. Yes, it's inspired by the same play (in turn inspired by a couple actual cases) that later inspired the stage version of Chicago. In this version Ginger's Roxie actually did not shoot Fred Casely.

I could write a book on how much I love Ginger Rogers and I'd probably run out of paper.
