Joe Sawyer stole the show

Joe Sawyer was an incredibly capable supporting character actor. But in this film he was outstanding. His character was less stereotyped than both Fonda's and O'Brien's. Although highly sentimental, this movie had a hard edged masculine strength that made the sentimentality much more palatable, partly due to Sawyer's terrific supporting role. Back in the 1950's his face would appear constantly on Million Dollar Movies, as well as his television appearances in late 1950's series. I have fond memories of watching Slim over and over again on Million Dollar Movies in the middle 1950's.
