This sounds much like another film from the same era, about a former soldier, a folksy type from out West with a terrific singing voice, who comes to NYC to seek his fortune. Two cabbies who were his fellow GIs do their best to help him out. A tycoon whose daughter this "singing cowpoke" falls in love with while performing at Ted Mack's radio amateur hour, turns out to be their old company colonel. So all comes out well in the end. Ted Mack is a hoot, a sort of smoother version of Al Jolson or Eddie Cantor, with his tux and battered top hat. He even sings an ode to his old hat. "Is everybody happy?" I was, after watching this. Caught it on TCM, but missed the title.
