Love this movie! (my favorite part)

I LOVE this movie. My favorite part is when they are on the ferry, and Fred Astair sings to Ginger Rogers in the fog. How romantic!

My favorite scene is "Lets call the hole thing off" not just the song but he dancing on skates. And the Cecil Flintridge guy.

This movie was fantastic, the dancing on skates was also my favorite part. I did like the engine room bit too, but I thought it being mostly a solo dance put it a smidge behind.

This movie is amazing! I don't know if I could pick one favorie part. But you're right-the the "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off" dance on roller skates is beyond words. The only other person to do it in a film was Gene Kelly. I would love to try it, but I'd probably end up killing myself. I also love "They Can't Take That Away From Me." Talk about POWER.

haha, i turned it on TCM at like 11 in the morning after like being up all night at coronation and afterparties and got like no sleep. And I turn it on I'm so exausted and it's the iceskate scene, and I had no idea who it was. Then there like falling on skates, so I have no idea it's fred and ginger. Then they start this like amazing skating routine and i'm all....Wait...what? lol. But some of the words I think they could've changed, ouster? Tom-atto? Well, it was the 30's...lol. This was a pointless story...haha

"But some of the words I think they could've changed, ouster? Tom-atto?"

I assume you mean "oysters." The way people in Brooklyn and the Bronx say it, it does sound something like "ersters." And British folks do say "to-mah-to," you know.

All the universe . . . or nothingness. Which shall it be, Passworthy? Which shall it be?

This is my favorite Fred Astaire. My favorite part was "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off" and the rollskates.

"Let's Call the Whole Thing off" is probably one of my favorite song/dance numbers, and the most touching is the "They Can't Take That Away From Me" scenes.

For laughs, I just couldn't help laughing seeing Petrov's reaction to (1) seeing the pics of him and Linda in the paper and (2) when he sees the Linda "dummy." His facial reaction was so ridiculous. hehehe.

Have a nice day, ya'll!!

I love the part where Pete meets Linda for the first time. That rediculous accent is hilarious. I was laughing myself silly the entire time.

I've always loved the "They All Laughed" dance. It is so beautiful and vintage Astaire and Rogers. The huge gleaming set, the great song, and the fact that they literally re-enact their roles in the dance, where he's pursuing her, she's apprehensive but interested, and by the end they're in love. I love the choreography and the big finish at the end, just fabulous.

I have always liked this movie, especially the plot, which is kind of racy for the time, and for the two of them especially, since they were both conservative people, but I have always wished the end of the film was stronger, they never got to do a big romantic dancec, but I suppose the "They Can't Take That Away From Me" on the ferry was supposed to substitute for the big dance number.

They All Laughed--it's one of my favorite movie bits, all movies included.
I love the way, in the beginning, she still thinks he's all ballet and doesn't know how the thing will work out, and then he just goes into a solid tap sequence.
I think I read that this number was done in one take, no cuts. Different cameras, but otherwise all of a piece. Terrific.

"Don't be a silly horse." How times have changed.

reply

Racy? How so? I didn't really think it was.

My favorite part in this film has got to be the dialog between Cecil and Jeffrey when Cecil's in jail. Hilarious!

The trouble with her is that she's here today and here tomorrow.

Oh my gosh, YES! That was so funny. I love Eric Blore. Just the way he speaks cracks me up. "Susquehanna Street Jail". Ahh, so funny.

reply

My favourite part has to be when Cecil was in jail on the phone to Jeffrey.

I was watching the film in the early hours of the morning because I couldn't sleep and had to stop myself from bursting into fits of laughter in fear of waking the rest of the house up. Hilarious scene.

The illusion of effortlessness requires a great effort indeed.

I always love the end where she goes onto stage & says, "Hocho choinga". So, he KNOWS it's her. When he's looking through all of the girls to find her it's so cute.

I love the roller skating scene & ANY scene with Eric Blore. He's always too funny!

Ray, am I using you...yes...shutup!-Rainman

She (and Fred near the beginning) was saying, "Ochi Chernye," which is the title of a Russian folk song.

My favorite scene occurs after Arthur (Jerome Cowan) takes those pictures of "Linda" with Petrov and he has just promised to stand by her through this 'difficult time'. Petrov is coming to see Linda and passes Arthur in the hallway and Arthur says, "Cad!" and then has the cutest most impish look on his face, and Petrov (as only Astaire can do) slides to a stop and looks stunned! Just perfect comic timing!
