What dog?

I was just wondering if anyone knows what breed of dog Ginger Rogers' character has. I thought maybe it was a Yorkshire Terrier with its hair cut short but i'm not sure.

I'm not sure what kind he is--I think he's a bit bigger than a Yorkie. Maybe a Skye terrier? But I do know that you also see him with Fred and Ginger in "The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle" (as Zowie) and in "The Sky's the Limit" with Astaire and Joan Leslie (as Waldo). He is also called Waldo in a 1942 Kay Kyser movie called "My Favorite Spy" (not to be confused with the Bob Hope movie of the same name). Sure was a cute and well-trained little fella.

I know it is not a Yorkie, since my little fellow is a Yorkie. The dog is very cute. Perhaps it is a light colored Carin Terrier Mix.
God Bless!!

Her dog in this movie is the cutest thing ever! I want one!

Maybe it´s a Malteser ? Want one aswell!

Walter looks like a Maltese, but they are white and it appears to be tan or light grey. I go to dog shows, but since I hang out with the working dogs, I don't know much about toy breeds! My guess would be that he is some kind of small terrier mix.

I love it when he keeps falling asleep during "I've Got Beginner's Luck". so adorable!

I love the big dog that Fred walks in order to make her acquaintance. Beautiful dog. Ginger's dog was cute, though. Probably some kind of mixed breed.

Yes, that is probably the case, then.

Might be a little big larger on the average than Ginger's dog and Zowie.

But the next question would be, does Linda (Ginger) take the pet with her when she leaves the ship? The dog seems to disappear after that, once she returns to her apartment and all.

reply

Just happened upon your comment (these nearly two years later).

Yup, the pup does seem to vanish once Linda's back in her NY apartment, but she does take him (or her) with her on the mail plane when she leaves the ship (the dog is seen being held by Linda after they're airborne).

Poe! You are...avenged!

reply

OT, but the musical bridge accompanying the walking the dogs on deck was composed by none other than George Gershwin.

reply

Thanks for the info. I'll be thinking about that next time I watch the scene. I've known about the Gershwins all my life, but was unfamiliar with what their music sounded like until these past couple of years. I'm really enjoying their music.

The "Walking the Dog — Promenade" was used as background music for "Splendor in the Grass" without attribution.

I guess plagiarism is okay, if you're in Hollywood.

I believe the dog is a Chinese Crested Powderpuff. This breed comes in two varieties, hairless and Powderpuff. Depending upon how the dog is groomed, they can appear very different; you can see 5 Cresteds groomed differently from one another and you'd think you're seeing 5 different breeds. But this pup has all the characteristics of a Chinese Crested Powderpuff.
