Hurry up with the DVD!

Yet another classic still not on DVD (it's not even available on VHS anymore). Prisoner of Zenda is also one of the few classic black & white films that (I think) would have been just as good (or maybe even better) made in color. Let's hope for a DVD soon.

There is a DVD: I managed to order it from FNAC's Brazilian website. It has removeable Portuguese subtitles.

How is the quality of the movie on DVD? I wish Hollywood would really hurry up with its version on DVD. Can't understand as well why Mr. Colman's movies are rarely transferred to the DVD format. His movies are really classics!

The quality's fine! Not a major restoration, but certainly an improvement on most TV broadcasts.

Just a note to add my bewilderment and disappointment to yours that more of Ronald Colman's films still haven't been released on DVD!

He had a quality all of his own and was a real treat to watch!

Now that 'Random Harvest' hast been released on DVD I hope the rest
of his excellent films will follow - soon!

Coming soon on DVD! :)

<SeanOHara> Are there any plans for a swashbuckler/adventure boxset,
and specifically for The Prisoner of Zenda ('37 and '52 versions)?

<Warner> Yes, most certainly. The plan is to do not only the '37 and
'52 ZENDAs but also the 1922 silent version as well. Lots more adventure
pics planned. Some this year. Some in 2007.

For what it's worth, there was a DVD produced in 2007 that has both the 1937 and 1952 verions on the same disc. A brief search on eBay or Amazon will turn it up.

The transfer quality may not be all that great, (one Amazon reviewer mentions having to crank the sound up for the '37 film to hear it properly) but it's hard to beat two versions on the same DVD for the bargain price it seems to be available for.

It's too bad the Criterion Collection can't get ahold of this film; it really does deserve their painstaking and thoughtful treatment. Unfortunately, the studios nowadays only seem to want to give the CC their more obscure properties, seeing as how the studios can make much more money releasing the DVDs themselves rather than licensing them (at least, as near as I can gather).

This is the version that I have. The sound is a little bit low on the 1937 film but it doesnt spoil it - just turned the volume up.

reply

Yes I found the sound a bit on the quiet side.
