Beautiful film

I just saw this and I'm struck by how incredibly captivating it was, such subtly and great acting. What a wonderful gem of a film.

I recommend it to any one who may ever look at this or by some chance get to this board!

I agree on both counts

Very low-key acting.

Someone else has seen this film!

From your post history you watch a lot of Eastern films, any recommendations based on this one?

Thanks for that, I rent from Amazon so I can only get The Lady Musashino and The Life of Oharu. I'll look forward to watching them though.

You can't go wrong there. Both movies feature one of Japan's all time great actresses, Kinuyo Tanaka.

Alas, only 3 of Yamanaka's 30 or so films have survived the ravages of time, neglect and war. The other two ("The Million Ryo Pot" and "Kochiyama Soshun") are also wonderful. The first (a comedy) is available with (fan) subs on eBay from time to time. The latter (sort of Robin Hood in urban 18th C. Tokyo) is only available in the form of an unsubbed Japanese DVD.
