The Palace in the Last Scenes

There is a painting on the wall of Mr. Maydig's study of the interior of a somewhat open-air Greek or Roman palace. The "palace" that George orders up in the last scenes is practically a replica of the one in the painting.

By the way, I thought this film was available on DVD, but the Amazon logo at the top of the page of the film's listing says no.

That etching on Maydig's wall is of the Pantheon, a Roman structure, and one of the most famous bits of architecture in the world. It is readily identified by the round pool of sunlight in the picture, which comes from the famous "opened dome" of the building. It might or might not be meant to be a foreshadowing of the later palace, since such "rotunda" forms are a fairly common sight throughout Europe, (e.g. St Peter's in the Vatican and St Paul's in London), and even in the U.S. as seen in many state houses, federal buildings, and so on.
