Terangi was about to **(spoilers)**

...kill himself, rather than live in a cell, when it seemed there was no hope of escape. Then, the guard cuts him down, so he goes with the flow and takes advantage! I love the fact that he was willing to die, though. In order, here's Terangi's view of his options, from most desirable to least:

1) Escape - and freedom
2) Death

3) Live in a prison cell (third, but a distant third; it was never really an option for him)

I just like that the movie didn't make it an escape plan from the get-go...he was really in the process of hanging himself!

"How do you feel?"
"Like the Kling-Klang King of the Rim-Ram Room!"

He too readily jumped into action and attacked the guards when they cut him down. I think he planned it that way. He would have been hanging long enough to be somewhat choked and not all that alert. Unless it was bad acting. Who knows?

I agree with you, that the planned out what he was doing.
As you said, he immediately went into action once the guard cut him down, not as though the idea was just coming to him.
He was most certainly taking a risk (what if the guard didn't hear him), but he had taken a risk every other time he tried to escape.
Also, with his many underwater swimming scenes, he could hold his breath, so could hold out for a time while hanging there.
Funny, but I don't remember the last time I was so wrapped up in a movie. When he was running through the halls and the courtyard, I let out an involuntary, "Hurry!."

At the start of the scene I thought he'd given up but it's clear he was not attempting suicide. He just needed a way to get out and that was the only thing left to do. The guards would be caught off guard and in reaction mode. He read the situation right.
